Muffenale Fewer courtyards but a solid stream of visitors

Muffendorf.  · Rain or shine, the streets of Muffendorf were filled for the annual Muffenale. On the down side, fewer villagers opened up their courtyards.

Whether heavy rain showers or beautiful sunshine, the streets of Muffendorf were well-filled for the 28th annual street festival, the Muffenale. Handmade arts and crafts, paintings, and flower arrangements were on offer at 60 different stands, but also music and food specialties were a big part of the scene.

Reibekuchen, the delicious German style potato pancake proved very popular. Folks waited an hour in line to get some of the Reibekuchen made by club KG Blau-Gold Muffendorf. A traditional peach punch with locally produced white wine was just across from the Reibekuchen stand. While the grapes were grown in Muffendorf, the peaches were not. There used to be peach farmers in the area though and the punch was a reminder of the peachy tradition.

One positive aspect of the rain was that it brought people to stalls where they could find a roof over their heads. This boosted the sales of some, like Karl Schnarrenberg. He has been carving mushrooms from wood and cork for years. It’s not that he’s big on mushrooms, “for me it’s all about the carving,” he said. “It’s a little bit like meditation.”

Sophia and Hans Müller had lots of merchandise with a hunting theme in their interior courtyard - from carved wild boars and trekking poles to a 200-year-old ammunition pouch with the original bullets. “We are clearing out the attic,” said Sophia Müller. They have been participating in the Muffenale for 23 years already. Because of their history of participation, they could judge how many Muffendorfers opened up their courtyards this year in comparison to previous years. “Today, hardly anyone is opening up their courtyard” says Hans Müller and he laments that it has become too commercial.

This wasn’t really the impression for many visitors, but Muffendorf native Holger Gerhard said he also remembered a time with more participants. Still, they were altogether happy with the festival and the mood in preparing for the event was very good indeed. It’s all about coming together at the Muffenale. (Orig. text: Stefan Knopp)
