GA short list Festivals that will rock the region this summer

Bonn · The 2017 festival season is just around the corner. Live music is already on the schedule for this weekend at Rhine in Flames. Here’s a look at where else you will find some rockin’ in the region this summer.

Rockaue Open Air

On four stages, the Open Air Festival will be hosting around 12 hours of live music. It’s the third year of the festival, which attracts rock, pop and electronic beats to Bonn’s Rheinaue. Unlike it’s predecessor R(h)einkultur, it’s no longer free of charge. With everything from punk, indie, hard rock, and modern blues to metal, there’s a diversity of musical genres. 30 national and international artists are expected.

Date: Saturday, July 8, 2017, from 12 to midnight

Location: Rheinaue Park Bonn, Ludwig-Erhard-Allee 20

Line-Up: Top-acts include the German medieval rock band "In Extremo", the Canadian rock band "Danko Jones" and the metalcore band "Callejon" from Düsseldorf. The progressive metal band "Atlin" from Bonn, the Death metal-Formation "Steorrah", "Ultraschall" with alternative sounds from Koblenz and the Cologne Indie band "Louder Than Wolves".

Spectators: Up to 20.000 Spectators

Green Juice

In its tenth year, the Green Juice Festival in Beuel will run for two days with 13 bands on two different stages. Because of its location in the middle of a residential area, it has a special charm, free of the all the madness of a huge festival. Musical style is somewhere between indie and punk rock.

It features talented newcomers from the region and established musicians from the German music scene. One stage will be set for live music and the other for DJs.

Date: Friday, August 18, 2017, from 2.30 pm and Saturday, August 19, 2017, from 11.30 am

Location: Park Neu-Vilich in Beuel

Size: The festival is designed for 7500 visitors

Line-Up: Top acts are the Swedish rock band "Royal Republic" and the German indie rock band Madsen. In addition, the Hamburg punk formation "Captain Planet" and the Munich alternative rockers from "Blackout Problems" play.

Panama Open Air

This is the second year for the electro-festival Panama Open Air at the Bonn Rheinaue. In previous years, the organizers of this event were at Rhein in Flames, attracting up to 20,000 visitors. Part of their thing is to show people that home is best.

Friends of electronic music will feel at home here, and performances have a spectacular LED backdrop on stage. More than 20 artists will perform on four stages: “Atlantic”, “Pacific”, “Circus” and “Newcomer.”

Date: Friday, July 28, 2017, until Saturday, July 29, 2017, from 3 pm

Location: Rheinaue Park

Größe: Approximately 27,000 visitors are expected.

Line-Up: The Dutch house DJ "Fedde le Grand", the London musical collective "Rudimental", the German Tech House duo "Format: B" from Berlin, the sound artist Recondite and the Berlin techno artist " Rødhåd ".

Rheinimpuls

Open air and free admission: The Rheinimpuls Festival runs two days on the first weekend in May, offering headliners from around Germany and regional newcomers. 14 bands and solo artists perform at the Rheinaue during Rhine in Flames weekend.

Date:Friday, 5 May, from 4 pm and Saturday, 6 May 2017, from 3 pm

Location: Rheinaue Park

Line-Up: The Hamburg-based "Le Fly" with a mix of rap, rock and reggae, the comedy singer-songwriters of "Zufällig Hier", the Cologne pop electro group "Newfoundland", ska-punk from "Destination Anywhere "and many more.

Tickets: The Rheinimpuls Festival can be visited free of charge.

Tanzberg Open Air

Twisted knobs and bass waves flood the Rheinaue as Tanzberg Open Air plays in the small meadow during Rhine in Flames. Techno, Tech House and Minimal are combined for some dancing under the skies.

Date: Friday, May 5, from 3 pm

Location: Rheinaue Park in Bonn

Größe: Up to 15,000 visitors

Line-Up: Dominik Eulberg, Oliver Huntemann, Hidden Empire, Electro-Thru

Summerjam

If it started out as a reggae festival, Summerjam has added lots of other musical influences over the years. It all began on an open stage at Loreley in 1984 and in 1996 it moved to Frühlinger Lake in north Cologne. Camping at the Frühlinger See is free in designated areas. For an additional charge of 15 euros per person per day, the campsites can be booked from Monday 26 June.

Date: Friday, June 30th, to Sunday, July 2nd

Location: at Frühlinger Lake in Cologne

Größe: 30,000 visitors

Line-Up: Damian Marley, Bob Marley's latest genre with a mix of traditional reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and electro, Cologne-born singer Patrice and the New Yorker rapper "Nas" are among the top acts of the festival.

Rheinbrand

A one-day open air fest with Kölsch rock, carnival music and a colorful program also appropriate for families. In the future, the fest will have a rotating motto in hopes of attracting all sorts of people. This year, seven artists and groups will be on hand.

Date: Saturday, 3 June, from 2.30 pm

Location: Next to Stadthalle Troisdorf

Line-Up: The Cologne Kölschrocker "Kasalla", the Bonn Carnival group "Querbeat" and the "Paveier" with Cologne dialect, carnival music and more.

c/o pop Festival

Successor of Popkomm which moved to Berlin in 2003, c/o pop has been offering this pop music fest since 2004. It’s also seen as a forum for those in the business who are interested in electronic music and electronic media. A festival ticket is valid for all five days or can be purchased for single days; individual show tickets are not available. Entrance is only allowed until capacity is reached - on a first come, first served basis.

Date: Wednesday, August 16, to Sunday, August 20

Location: Cologne

Größe: Approximately 30,000 visitors

Line-Up: The Berlin music group "Moderat" with electronic music, Ben Cooper with his solo project "Radical Face" and the Irish folk pop musician James Vincent McMorrow are some of the other guests of the music festival.

Tickets: Day tickets are available from 35 Euro and a 5-day festival ticket is 75 Euro plus advance booking fee.

Jeck im Sunnesching

After a successful run in Cologne, the summer Carnival festival is coming to the Bonn Rheinaue. Organizers are hoping for good weather with the Kölsch motto: “fiere ohne ze friere” which basically means - party without freezing!

Date: Saturday, September 2nd, from 9am

Location: Rheinaue Park in Bonn

Line-Up: Brings, Kasalla, Cat Ballou, Querbeat and others.

Zusammen leuchten (Light up together)

This is more than just a music festival: The Cologne event “Zusammen leuchten” offers 18 hours of live music, a graffiti workshop, acrobats, poetry and movies all in one.

Date: Saturday, May 27, from 12 noon

Location: on the grounds at the Girlitzweg in Cologne

Line-Up: The indie-pop band "Tonbandgerät" from Hamburg, the Berlin-New York acoustic trio "The Trouble Notes" and the Freiburg indie band "Brothers of Santa Claus"

Tickets: 39 euros per person

Rock am Ring

The biggest and most famous festival in the region returns to its origins this year and brings the rock back to the ring. Since 1985, the event has brought national and international music to the Eifel. After two years at an airfield in Mendig, the festival is now back in the middle of the green at the Nürburgring

Date: Friday, June 2nd, until Sunday, June 4th

Location: Nürburgring in the Eifel

Größe: 90,000 visitors

Line-Up: The main acts this year are "Rammstein", "Die Toten Hosen" and "System of a Down"

Tickets: From 210 euros for a festival ticket
