GA short list Farmers' markets offering local eggs in Bonn and region

Bonn · Three million contaminated eggs have been delivered to Germany and many have been taken off the shelves. For those who prefer to buy locally, here is a list of farmers' markets in the area which offer fresh eggs.

The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture reports that at least three million eggs contaminated with the insecticide Fipronil have been delivered to Germany from the Netherlands. A large part of them have made it into stores and are being recalled. While evidence of the Fipronil contamination has been found in eggs in the Netherlands and Belgium, German egg farms are still being examined, according to the ministry.

In the search for the source of contamination, a Belgian cleaning products manufacturer is coming increasingly under pressure. The firm from Antwerp had delivered disinfection product Dega 16 to the Netherlands company Chickfriend for the purpose of cleaning the stalls. It is suspected that Fipronil was mixed into the cleaning solution without permission.

The responsible German authorities say there is “no concrete” risk to the health but children are more vulnerable and one could not fully rule out a health risk for them. Contaminated eggs from the Netherlands have been delivered to North Rhine Westphalia and Niedersachsen in Germany. Lidl, Aldi, Rewe and Penny reported that as a precaution, they have taken all eggs from the Netherlands out of their assortment.
