A driver has been killed on the L261 in Bonn-Röttgen last night when the vehicle he was travelling in hit a tree. The man was killed instantly.

The 34-year-old driver was travelling on the road towards Meckenheim in his Audi A4 around 3am, when he came off the road towards the right. Apparently without slowing down at all the car hit the tree head on. A witness had noticed the accident and contacted the police.

As Uwe Karp, officer in charge of the fire brigade Bonn, reported, the man was jammed in inside the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident. To recover his body, the fire officers had to remove the car from the tree with a wire rope hoist and had to also cut the doors and roof from the car. That way they could push away the front part of the car to recover the body of the driver.

According to the first findings, the man had been travelling on his own, said Robert Scholten, spokesperson for the police in Bonn. The cause of the accident and the exact identity of the man were not clear yet. The police are investigating.

The road was completely closed off for several hours. Only at 7am the route was re-opened for traffic. Because the roots of the tree were badly affected, the felling of the tree had been ordered.

The police are looking for witnesses who might have seen the accident happening to come forward and contact the investigating team at this telephone number: 0228/150.
