University Clinic for Women Director of Uni Bonn women’s clinic leaves due to differences

Bonn · Walther Kuhn is leaving his position as head of the University Clinic for Women. The reason is a restructuring that he could not support. Breast health specialist and expert Andree Faridi will become the head of a new department.

The Director of the University Clinic for Women, Walther Kuhn, will step down on June 30. In a letter to his patients, he gives his reason as "a restructuring of our gynecological clinic", which he could not support. Kuhn was not available by phone for comment, but the medical director and CEO of the University Hospital Bonn, Wolfgang Holzgreve said: "We have hired a specialist in breast disease, which will improve our offer." He felt this was a necessary step because the field of breast disease and treatment was a large specialty area. Medicine has progressed so far that doctors can now do much to help in the case of serious breast disease.

Andree Faridi will become the director of the newly founded Department of Senology, the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the breast. Kuhn did not agree to having another director alongside of him in the field of gynecology. "He could have continued on in his position, but decided otherwise. I respect that," explained Holzgreve in an interview with the General-Anzeiger. He thanked Kuhn for his many years of work at the hospital. A replacement for him will be sought.

The 58-year-old Faridi wants to expand the certified breast center, the reconstructive and plastic-aesthetic breast surgery and establish a specialized unit on the Venusberg. Part of his strategy is relying on good communication with doctors in private practice and self-help groups. Faridi was previously medical director and chief physician of the breast center at Vivantes Hospital Am Urban in Berlin. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Baotou, a city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.

Faridi specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, especially breast cancer. He finds that individual care for each patient affected is very important, including not only medical considerations, but also their personal situation. "My motto reflects the need for competent, empathic and holistic care, including alternative healing methods that are scientifically justifiable," said Faridi. Through the cooperation of the various departments of the University Hospital Bonn, a diagnosis should be obtained quickly. He says early detection and modern surgical techniques aid in their success.

In the case of a tumor, if the breast needs to be removed, Faridi offers a variety of breast reconstruction options in the new Department of Senology. Also women with malformations of the breast or a failed breast surgery as well as transsexuals would find help. In addition, there is an opportunity to participate in oncological research studies and health services research. Among other things, Faridi wants to investigate whether and to what extent sport and nutrition can have a positive influence on the course of the disease and any necessary chemotherapy.
