Bonn · With the Eifel National Park only around 50 kilometres away, it is easy to make an excursion to the nearby Eifel. We have collected ten suggestions of things to do in the Eifel.

Cycling on the Kyll cycle path

The Kyll cycle path offers a bicycle tour through the Eifel. It meanders along the Kyll and provides views of the North Eifel, Volcanic Eifel and South Eifel. The entire route is 121.4 kilometres long with an ascent of 574 metres and descent of 1035 metres.

Industrial museum in Heimbach Hasenfeld

Tours are provided in the art nouveau waterworks from 1904, during which you can visit the heritage protected waterworks. The guided tours are free but registration with the visitor service is required.

Lava cellars in the Volcano Park (Vulkanpark)

A network of underground “lava cellars” stretch over three square metres below the town of Mendig. These were formed during the mining of basalt lava for use as a building material. The cellars were later used to store beer. Today you can visit them.

Hiking on the Eifelsteig

For fans of hiking, the Eifelsteig offers 15 daily stages over a total of 313 kilometres. On the tours, you can experience the heather and moorland landscapes of the High Fens as well as the reservoirs of the Eifel National Park and much more. A local service will transport your luggage to the next hotel so you can hike with a light bag.

Experience motorsport at the Nürburgring

Whether a look into the past in the Motorsport Museum or on the track as a co-driver of a 585 horsepower car, the Nürburgring offers motorsport fans a lot. Those wanting to get behind the wheel can do so either in a simulator or on the actual track. Those wanting to explore the course more slowly can also do so on foot – there are guided walks along the course.

Geyser in Andernach

The highest cold water geyser in the world is in Andernach. A fountain up to 60 metres high forms roughly every two hours. You can also arrive by boat on the Rhine.

Watch birds of prey and other animals

You can enjoy birds of prey demonstrations and seminars as well as fallow deer at the Hellenthal bird of prey centre. Various birds of prey are also bred there. There are demonstrations at 11am, 2.30pm and 4pm until October.

Crime route in Hillesheim

There is a special walking tour for fans of Eifel crime novels. Eleven original locations from the books can be walked to in two hiking tours of 17 and 20 kilometres. The crime thriller walk of two kilometres is a shorter version. This is also available as a guided tour.

At Eifel Adventure World you will find a summer toboggan run, quadbike course and minigolf. It offers a lot of variety, especially for younger visitors. Further events are added depending on the time of year.

Contemplation at the Maria Laach monastery

The Maria Laach monastery was founded in 1093. The monastery and the abbey, which is a Romanesque historical monument, are an ensemble worth seeing. Visitors are welcome. The Benedictine monks have set up their own guest wing.
