Reuterstraße and Belderberg Decision on diesel driving ban in Bonn postponed

Bonn · The decision on a driving ban for certain cars on Reuterstraße and Belderberg has been postpone once again. A decision deadline of July 31 has been cancelled.

It looks like it’s waiting time again as a decision will not be made at the end of July as planned. Surprisingly, a court in Münster announced that it would not decide on the proposed driving ban for most diesel cars and certain petrol cars on Reuterstraße and Belderberg on July 31 or August 1 as planned. A new date has not yet been set.

According to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which represents the city of Bonn in court, a new version of the Clean Air Plan for the city of Bonn is about to be completed. It should be coming into effect on August 15 and include forecasts of future nitrogen dioxide pollution on the two affected roads.

It is still unclear when the court in Münster will make a final decision. A new date for a hearing will be set for the city of Bonn after the new air pollution control plan comes into effect, according to the court. In any case, the newest development delays a decision once again. The Administrative Court of Cologne originally ordered the City of Bonn to implement a driving ban on April 1 following a complaint by "Deutsche Umwelthilfe" ( a German environmental association). But an appeal by the state resulted in a suspension of the ruling being implemented.

According to the Cologne ruling, diesel vehicles with Euro 4 engines and older as well as petrol cars of classes Euro 1 to 3 are to be banned from the Belderberg. On Reuterstraße, the driving ban includes diesel vehicles with engines up to Euro 5 and petrol cars of classes Euro 1 and 2.
