Before flight to Turkey : Customs confiscates four suitcases full of cash at Cologne/Bonn Airport

Customs authorities confiscated four suitcases full of cash at Cologne/Bonn Airport. 200,000 British pounds and more than one million euros were discovered during baggage checks for a flight to Turkey.

Customs confiscated four suitcases full of cash at Cologne/Bonn Airport. According to information provided on Friday by the Essen Customs Investigation Office and the North Rhine-Westphalian State Criminal Investigation Bureau, at the end of November, officials discovered a suitcase containing 200,000 British pounds while checking luggage for a flight to Turkey. They then decided to check the rest of the baggage as well.

Customs found three other pieces of luggage containing cash with a total value of more than one million euros. According to the information, the suitcases could be traced back to two German and two Turkish nationals who wanted to use them to travel to Istanbul.

Proceedings were initiated against all four persons because they had not declared the cash. They had to complete their travel without the money. Authorities are now investigating on suspicion of money laundering. When leaving Germany for a country outside the EU, there is an obligation for disclosure when carrying cash in the amount of 10,000 euros or more.
