Discussion about possible location Cable car station divides politicians and administration in Bonn

Bonn · Where is the station for the planned cable car to be built on the right side of the Rhine? This question currently divides the affected citizens' associations as well as politicians and city administration.

At the June meeting of the Beuel district council, the city planning office surprised the public with the news that the city of Bonn currently prefers a cable car station on Schießbergweg - more precisely on the large green space between the Telekom site and the street Auf dem Wingert. In the course of a feasibility study, this area has prevailed over a possible station at Ramersdorf underground station. Traffic planner Dirk Delpho explained the alleged advantages: "Because of the proximity to the Stadtbahn line 62 and the planned stop of the S13 near Telekom, many more passengers can change to the cable car at Schießbergweg than at the underground station Ramersdorf - up to 3500 commuters per day".

This statement surprised some politicians very much. It was previously assumed that the underground station at the roundabout in Ramersdorf was the most convenient place for further public transport services. Ludwig Burgsmüller (CDU) and Fenja Wittneven-Welter (SPD) advocated a cable car station at the underground station. "Citizens will not be able to get to a station on the green meadow at Schießbergweg. How are you supposed to reach it as a commuter?", asked the politician. And Burgsmüller called for the meadow to be kept free: "The approximately 50,000 square metres of land was kept free by the city at the time as reserve land for a possible crossing of the S13 Rhine via the Südbrücke. As is well known, the route is different, which is why the meadow can remain structurally unused".

Delpho stuck to his opinion: Because of the proximity of the S13, line 62 and the bus lines 606/607 located at Landgrabenweg near the Telekom campus, Schießbergweg offers an optimal barrier-free transfer situation between these public transport services. In addition, Deutsche Bahn is planning a bike-and-ride facility to connect the bicycle traffic at the S13 stop. For the cable car station itself, further bicycle parking facilities would have to be built, Delpho said. When asked by Burgsmüller, the city explained that no parking spaces for cars are planned on Schießbergweg in the immediate vicinity of the cable car station. The parking lot at the underground station, which is to be developed into a mobility hub, would be available for this purpose. From here the cable car station would be accessible by line 62, bus or bicycle rental system. A few days later, Marco Rudolph (CDU) explained the current situation to the chairmen of the three civic associations concerned and encountered different interpretations from the volunteers. While Karl Wengenroth (Limperich) can imagine a stop at Schießbergweg, Michael Quabeck (Küdinghoven) and Wilfried Mermagen (Ramersdorf) pleaded for keeping the meadow free and a cable car station at the underground station. Together, they all share the opinion that the city of Bonn has not yet made good progress with its planning. "The time is running out. In 2022, DB wants to start construction work on the third track near Küdinghoven. In 2028, the track to Oberkassel should be ready," said Rudolph, who is calling for the content of the transport services to be coordinated.

What gave everyone involved a headache during the on-site visit to the Schießbergwiese was the accessibility of the area for rescue services and fire brigades. The city wants to allow access via Schießbergweg from the direction of the city railway station. This, in turn, is viewed critically, especially by the citizens' associations. "From Landgrabenweg it is not possible because of the clearance height at the railway underpass, from Schießbergweg it is not possible because of the safety barriers", said Quabeck and categorically rejects the dismantling of the safety barriers at the level of the city railway line. All three citizens' associations are in favour of extending the cable car from the Rhine rail to the Enner Heights. "Anyone who wants to intercept commuter flows from the mountain region at an early stage must offer a cable car stop including a large park-and-ride area in the Holtorf area," says Michael Husmann (CDU).

The chairmen of the citizens' association would like to have detailed information on the height of the cable car piers, the size of the entrance and exit building and the storage hall for the cable car seats. "We lack the imagination to visualise such a facility behind the Telekom campus," said Quabeck. Wengenroth imagines the cable car as a ski lift and Mermagen adds: "We Ramersdorfer are disappointed with the plans. However, we hope that the cable car will pass over the underground station and thus upgrade this area to a real hub. From there, the cable car can also be led directly up the Ennert."
