It’s not summer in Bonn without a silent movie theater: This also applies in the year of the Corona pandemic. The 36th edition of Germany's largest silent film festival is to take place in August, as the Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn has now announced. According to the announcement, the silent film festival will take place from August 6 to 16 in the Arkadenhof of the university.

At the silent film festival, the corona-related hygiene and safety regulations will be taken into account, it was said. As usual, eleven evenings of outstanding productions from the early days of cinema will be presented in the Arkadenhof of the University of Bonn, accompanied by live music - open air and free admission. The programme will be announced by mid-July. The number of seats in the courtyard must be limited to 500 people.

Streaming offer supplements live experience

A central concern of the association is to reach as large an audience as possible despite the reduced space available. "For this reason, all films will be streamed after projection in the Arkadenhof - via the festival's website www.internationale-stummfilmtage.de - and will be available online for 48 hours at a time," announced festival spokeswoman Kristina Wydra. The musical accompaniments will be played and recorded by the artists beforehand or recorded live at the screening. The films will be shown from 21.30 hrs, with admission starting at 20 hrs every evening this year.

Since the Silent Film Festival depends on support, not only the visitors on site are asked for donations. Those who follow the festival online also have the opportunity to donate.

The 36th International Silent Film Festival - Bonn Summer Cinema is organised by the Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn e.V. in cooperation with the Filmmuseum München, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Bonner Kinemathek and supported by the Federal City of Bonn, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM).

The programme of the 36th International Silent Film Festival - Bonn Summer Cinema can be found at www.internationale-stummfilmtage.de from mid-July.
