Alliance for sustainability Bonn Lord Mayor becomes president of cities network

Bonn · Lord Mayor of Bonn Ashok Sridharan has been voted president of the international cities network for sustainability (ICLEI). He follows Lord Mayor Park Won-soon from Seoul (South Korea), who has held the presidency since 2015.

As ICLEI President, Sridharan is supported by the First Vice-President, Cathy Oke, a city councillor from Melbourne (Australia) as well as two Vice-Presidents – Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan from Catbalogan (Philippines) and Frank Cownie, mayor of Des Moines, Iowa (USA). Sridharan will be officially inaugurated into his new office at the ICLEI World Congress on 19 June in Montreal (Canada).

Bonn has been a member of the ICLEI, in which around 1500 cities worldwide are organised, since 1999. Since 2010, Bonn has also been the headquarters of the ICLEI World Secretariat, which now has more than 40 employees. The climate section already moved to Bonn in 2009.

Bonn has also been the venue for the Resilient Cities conference series since 2010, which brings together some 400 participants from cities, scientific organisations, development cooperation and the UN annually. Sridharan has been a member of the ICLEI Global Board (GexCom) since 2015 and has been First Vice-President since 2016. He represents ICLEI primarily at the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn.
