After the explosion at a house in Cologne, rescue workers recovered a body at the scene of the accident on Wednesday evening. "A body was found, but we don't know if it is the occupant," said a police spokesman. The 79-year-old resident of the house had previously been reported missing. The body will be identified by the forensic department on Thursday, the spokesperson said.

The terraced house in the Buchheim district was completely destroyed by the explosion early Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the emergency services had been alerted around 1:30 pm.

The structural base of the neighbouring houses was not affected, the police spokesman said in the evening. "The fire department's measures have been completed. We will monitor the area overnight.
