Bonn International School “Alice in Wonderland” musical open to the public

Plittersdorf · Students at Bonn International School have been busy rehearsing for their performance of the musical “Alice in Wonderland”. The fittingly colorful and lively musical is suitable for all ages and is open to the public this Thursday and Friday.

The Macbeth performance by the Bonn International School (BIS) theater ensemble last year was pretty heavy stuff. "The smaller children didn't understand it," says BIS student Lily-Rose (13). This year, they decided on something completely different. If Shakespeare's work was an epic drama, the new piece is epic nonsensical, but nevertheless great world literature: BIS is staging a musical version of "Alice in Wonderland".

Lily-Rose has the leading role, but not alone: She plays the normal Alice, while two classmates impersonate the huge and the shrunken girl. As you know, when Alice follows a white rabbit with a pocket watch, she tumbles into a world where nothing is the way it was before. Flowers, caterpillars and cats can speak, the Mad Hatter celebrates his non-birthday, and the Queen of Hearts' court consists of playing cards. Alice becomes very tiny or very large by eating cookies or carrots, and finds that none of the social rules she has learned will help her advance in this world.

"It’'s nice and funny, everybody can laugh along", says Lily-Rose. And wonderfully colorful, adds Halina (15), who plays the Cheshire Cat. With costumes, make-up, choreography and stage design, the students were able to really enjoy themselves. The realization of Lewis Carroll's famous work is fittingly colorful. Zoe (16), who plays the Queen of Hearts, and likes to see heads rolling, thinks that it is much more suitable for primary school children. The biggest challenge? "Many who took part in Macbeth didn't want to (take part in the Alice in Wonderland musical) because they didn't want to sing."

Students rehearsed after classes and on weekends. During the dress rehearsal, the students seemed to have a lot of fun. Which is also due to the fact that they were allowed to have a say. So Halina and her two classmates, who play the Cheshire Cat together, had the opportunity to think up their own character. And they also had a say in other things, just not in the choice of roles: According to Zoe, there was a casting by age group, after which the roles were distributed.

"Alice in Wonderland" is open to the public this Thursday and Friday at 7 pm in the auditorium of Bonn International School, Martin-Luther-King-Straße 14. Admission is free, but you have to register by sending an e-mail to development@bonn-is.de .
