Restaurant Guide : A slice of Britain at the Upper Crust café

The British café and snack bar “Upper Crust” in Bonn Südstadt has been run by Liverpudlian Phil Dickinson since October 2016. Decorated with English souvenirs, the cosy café offers inside space for 15 guests and has a further 12 seats outside.

On the menu: Phil offers a full English breakfast (including Heinz baked beans, sausages, back bacon and more) for 9.90 Euro, traditional fish & chips (cod) for 11.40 Euro, twelve different Cornish pasties including vegetarian varieties at 5.50 Euro each and homemade scones for 2 Euros. Traditional afternoon tea is served with sandwiches and scones on a stand for 16.90 Euro.

Drinks: English organic lemonades from Fentimans (0.275 l) for 3.20 Euro, Spitfire Amber Kentish Ale from Shepherd Neame (0.5 l) 3.80 Euro, Thatchers Vintage Cider (0.5 l) 4.20 Euro, Hobgoblin Gold Ale (0.5 l) 4 Euro, seven different varieties of Windsor Castle tea for 3.60 Euro each.

The café is popular with students, Anglophiles and even celebrities. The house philosophy according to Phil is to provide traditional English cuisine with a focus on homemade food.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 3pm. Closed on Sundays and Mondays
