A 56-year-old man died in a fire in Bad Godesberg late on Monday evening. The fire service went to a fire in an apartment building on Wörthstraße around 11pm after several emergency calls were received simultaneously at the fire service control centre. When fire fighters arrived, the first floor apartment was on fire with flames beating out of the window towards the rescue services.

As it was thought someone was still in the apartments, the fire service used the stairwell and a ladder at the back of the building to perform a rescue and fight the fire. When the apartment door could finally be forced open, the man was found lifeless. The rescue services were only able to confirm the man’s death.

The fire service was able to put out the fire with two extinguishing hoses. To prevent smoke spreading, a mobile smoke curtain and a high-powered fan were used. A total of 30 firemen were on duty.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, said police spokesman Simon Rott on Tuesday morning. The criminal police have started investigations.
