Prison sentence for sex offense 18-year-old Syrian gets three year sentence for rape

BONN · An 18-year-old Syrian has received a jail sentence for the rape of a 23-year-old university student from France. She had been visiting a friend in Bonn in April when the incident occurred.

A Bonn juvenile court sentenced an 18-year-old Syrian to three years of juvenile custody on charges of rape. The young Syrian was sent to Germany by his parents in 2015 with the help of smugglers; they wanted to protect him from the dangers of the war in Syria. On April 7 of 2018, he sexually assaulted a 23-year-old university student from France, at the Sportpark Nord (North Sports Park) in Bonn. He has been held in custody since the incident occurred, and he will now remain in detention.

The victim returned to Bonn to act as a witness; she sat opposite the defendant in the courtroom, observing him. But the defendant did not look up when the judge read the verdict. When the incident occurred, she had been visiting her best friend from France, who works in Bonn. The two women went out for the evening, and met the defendant and his 34-year-old uncle in front of a pub. They chatted with each other, got along well and moved on together. At some point, it became clear that they wanted to spend the night together. The best friend stayed with the 34-year-old in his apartment, while the 23-year-old and the defendant made their way to the housing accommodations where he had a room.

The 18-year-old then realized that he had no key and could not go there with the 23-year-old. So he took the French woman, who did not know the area, to a hill at the Sportpark Nord. He pushed her abruptly to the ground, held her there, sat on her, grabbed her by the head and then raped her. Her pleas to stop and her cries for help were ignored.

The 23-year-old could not get any air and she was afraid she would die. When he finally left her, she ran straight down the hill, directly into the arms of a resident who had heard her screams. The 36-year-old called the police and an ambulance. The defendant ran away, but later turned himself in to police and was put in custody.

In the courtroom, the 23-year-old French woman said to the defendant that she was sorry that these fateful minutes destroyed his life. “But you made a terrible mistake,” she said. For the court, the consequences for the traumatized victim were so severe, and the reasoning of the defendant so poor that a sentencing was reached for three years of juvenile detention. The defense announced it would appeal the ruling.
