Logistics giant invests millions 129 new jobs at warehouse built by DHL

RHEINBACH · A new distribution center with cutting-edge technology is being built for global power management company Eaton by DHL. In the first stage, 129 employees are expected to be working there.

DHL is building a new distribution center for its customer Eaton, a global specialist in power management. The facility is made up of a giant hall with a total area of around 35,000 square meters. It comes with a price tag in the tens of millions for DHL. The warehouse is expected to be brought into operation at the end of the year. During a tour of the construction site, project manager Simon Geisel and DHL spokesman Dieter Pietruck explained the current status of the project.

Geisel said there will be 129 full-time jobs in the first stage, along with 90 parking spaces and 40 bicycle parking spaces. A special thermal insulation supports the heating and ventilation. In the current hot summer, the hall has remained pleasantly cool. The roof has a 25 centimeter thick insulation layer. For truck drivers there is a separate entrance with a lounge area and there are elevators to make the building accessible for workers with physical impairments.

There are 28 electronically controlled warehouse doors where trucks can load, a traffic light system for safety, two transformer stations to supply energy and lights with motion detectors to save on energy.

In an area at the front of the hall complex, there is a long floor with offices. This leads to break rooms with kitchenettes and microwaves for workers, and restrooms with showers. The smaller hall with its automated spare parts warehouse is to be used predominantly with robots. The whole complex is equipped with a modern sprinkler protection system.

The hall is initially geared towards 13 years of operation, which is a relatively long time for the logistics industry, according to project leader Geisel. Pietruck didn’t want to mention any numbers in terms of revenue, only saying that it was a “huge logistics location.”

The plant is equipped with cutting-edge technology giving it a high level of automation. It will be built to meet the Gold Standard 2015 of the German Council for Sustainable Building. It also signals DHL and Eaton’s commitment to the wider Bonn region.
