New logistics center : DHL invests 123 million euros in hub at Cologne/Bonn Airport

DHL Express opened its new logistics center at Cologne/Bonn Airport on Tuesday. With efforts aimed at climate protection, the facility is completely emissions-free.

DHL Express officially opened its new logistics center at Cologne/Bonn Airport on Tuesday. It represents an investment by DHL of 123 million euros. Cutting edge sorting technology is being used in the 15,000-square meter center to speed up the processing of time-critical shipments. 340 employees work there. DHL Express board member John Pearson described the energy and temperature control system as groundbreaking. In cooperation with Cologne/Bonn Airport, DHL Express uses a large ice-energy-storage system with a capacity of over 1.3 million liters and a total length of 18 kilometers of piping to ensure that the center is sufficiently cooled in summer and supplied with the necessary heat in winter.

In combination with a heat pump and photovoltaic systems installed on the roof, the technology in the new facility is completely emissions-free. DHL Express is a pillar of Deutsche Post DHL Group and delivers express shipments to 220 countries. In addition to three global hubs, DHL has 20 regional hubs, including Cologne/Bonn. Most shipments arrive by air and are redistributed to aircraft or other modes of transport depending on their destination.

"Since it was founded exactly 50 years ago, DHL has repeatedly distinguished itself with innovative solutions and rapidly advanced the development of the entire express industry. Once again, this is demonstrated by the many technical innovations that are being implemented at our new hub in Cologne," said Pearson. First and foremost, DHL is increasing its capacity for time-critical shipments through its investments at Cologne/Bonn Airport in order to be prepared for the increasing customer demand from online trading. 20,000 shipments can be handled per hour.
