Traffic in Bonn Congestion at the Bad Godesberger tunnel will ease

Bad Godesberg · Bonn drivers have good reason to breathe a sigh of relief: the bottleneck caused by works to the Bad Godesberg road tunnel will soon be eased. The city has announced that both tunnels are expected to go into operation again on Saturday, 23 November.

The civil engineering office was able to complete the main work slightly earlier than planned and the reopening of the tunnel is now imminent. The overall project is scheduled for completion in January/February 2020. “For the first time since the start of the renovation of the ventilation system in August 2018, traffic can now pass through both main tunnels before the end of the overall project, although some restrictions will remain in place,” says the city. However, prior to the reopening of the tunnel, it must be completely closured from Friday evening, 22 November until probably Saturday afternoon, 23 November.

Restrictions will remain in place

After completion of the work, both lanes of the tunnels in a northbound direction will be continuously open to traffic. Since it is only possible to drive from Mehlem via the B9 – the Friedrichallee intersection is not yet completed – the traffic capacity is still compromised compared to full tunnel function. In the southbound direction, two lanes are available to traffic, up to the Heiderhof/Muffendorf junction, but traffic will then be directed onto the right-hand lane, as the Friedrichallee exit must remain closed until the completion of the whole project at the start of 2020. The tunnel to and from Friesdorf must also remain closed.

In order for the tunnel to open again in both directions, the city must completely close the tunnel again from 9 p.m. on Friday 22 November until Saturday afternoon 23 November. As soon as the upgrading work on the uphill side of the tunnel is completed on 22 November, the provisional traffic routing will have to be dismantled and the construction site signs and the guide walls in the tunnel be removed for the traffic lane changeover to occur. This cannot be done while traffic is still circulating.

The traffic restrictions in the Wurzerstrasse/B9 intersection area can then also be lifted, as the Godesberg city centre connection via the short tunnel in Godesberger Strasse is expected to be open again in both directions on the 23 November.

Due to the complete closure of the tunnel to traffic in both directions, considerable delays should be expected at times; diversions via Mittelstrasse, Ubierstrasse and Konstantinstrasse will be signposted. The civil engineering office of the city of Bonn, which is responsible for the conversion, is already requesting understanding for the unavoidable adverse effects.
