Accident at Phantasialand Worker died from a broken neck

Brühl · An employee of Phantasialand died in a tragic accident in March. The cause of death was determined to be a broken neck; officials are examining the case.

The public prosecutor’s office is examining whether there might be third-party responsibility in connection with the fatal accident at Phantasialand on March 14. A 58-year-old employee at the amusement park was doing maintenance work on the “Winja’s Fear & Force” rollercoaster when he suffered a neck fracture and died.

According to the District Government of Cologne, the man was on an inspection run when he became wedged in and crushed. The amusement park was not yet open for the season at the time of the accident and it is still closed. Summer season opening is on Saturday, April 1.

Senior prosecutor Ulrich Bremer told GA that investigations at the moment are not pointed towards any one person or firm. They are only trying to determine if there is third-party responsibility. Included in the investigation is an evaluation of the rollercoaster to see if there had been any technical defects. As well, they are still awaiting results of the blood toxicology report from a medical laboratory. Bremer said the examination could take weeks if not months.
