Better traffic flow Will Bonn get a new parking guidance system?

BONN · The city wants to replace the existing parking guidance system with a new one. The conversion will cost 3.57 million euro, 1.72 million of which will come from the federal government.

On 14 May, the council will decide whether to release municipal funds for the new parking guidance system and approve the planning concept, for which the federal government would provide 1.72 million euros as part of the “Digitisation of Municipal Transport Systems” funding programme. The new parking system would have to be implemented by the end of 2020.

The aim of the new parking guidance system is to improve traffic flow and thus reduce exhaust emissions. The search for a parking space should be made easier, said Mayor Ashok Sridharan. The existing 28-year-old guidance system consists of 10 dynamic and 15 static displays. It is planned to renew the control and display systems. In particular, however, it is also planned to incorporate more multi-storey car parks and other car parks within the databases. To date, the control systems include the Beethoven-Parkhaus, Friedensplatzgarage, Marktgarage, Münsterplatzgarage, Stadthausgarage, Beethovenparkplatz and the multi-storey car park on Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße. Possible additions would include the Operngarage, the car park on Rabinstraße, the Stiftsgarage, the Unigarage, the Brückenforum, the DB car park, the Oxfordgarage and the Zurich-Parkhaus. However, according to the administration, the linking of a car park would depend on the willingness of private operators. “Newer technical developments such as mobile-phone parking” should be included. It would also be possible to integrate the pilot project with Deutsche Telekom to digitally determine and display occupied and free parking spaces at Stiftsplatz. Information boards on the main access roads to the city centre are also planned.
