GA short list Where you can soak up the sun in the city

BONN · It could just be that the thermometer reaches the 30-degree mark for the first time this year on Thursday. Here are some places where you can enjoy the sunshine right in Bonn city center.

Rhine River promenade

Warm temperatures automatically draw lots of people to the water. The nice thing about Bonn: The Rhine is within walking distance of the city center. One can go shopping and then take a leisurely walk along the Rhine. If you walk from the city center in the direction of Graurheindorf, you can set yourself down on one of the grassy areas on the shore and enjoy the sun. And if you don’t want to run along the Rhine, what about a boat trip? See our story about boat trips from Bonn.

Hofgarten at the University of Bonn

A happy and well visited place on warm days is the Hofgarten (the grassy meadow adjacent to the University of Bonn). Located directly at the main building of the University of Bonn in the middle of the city, here’s a place where you can take a break from everyday life. The meadow is not only popular with students; amateur athletes also come together here and play football, for example. Benches around the meadow invite you to sit down and linger.

Marktplatz

There is no green lawn here, but there are ice cream parlors, cafes and snack bars, all which have outdoor catering. Not only can you be seated comfortably in the sun, but you can also let your eyes wander in the direction of the Old Bonn Town Hall or over to the fresh produce market.

The Alte Zoll

The Alte Zoll (Old Customs) is located on the Brassertufer below the Hofgarten. With a refreshing drink in the beer garden, visitors can enjoy the sun on their faces with a direct view of the Rhine. If you prefer shade, you will find it under the big trees. Even boule lovers have a place here. The "Alte Zoll" is also a popular meeting place in the evening, for those who want to end the day with a picnic, barbecue or sports.

  • Address Biergarten: Brassertufer, 53113 Bonn
  • Opening hours: Every day from 11am - midnight

Kaiserplatz

An ice cream parlor, park benches and a large fountain also make Kaiserplatz in Bonn a popular place to visit on warm days. The square, which can be found at the start of Poppelsdorf Allee between the Bonn main station and the main building of the university, owes its name to former German emperor William I. For those who don’t necessarily want to visit one of the local restaurants which offer seating both in the sun and shade, there is a kiosk, a bakery and a baguette place so you can buy something and take it with you.

Münsterplatz

Münsterplatz is just the right place for sun worshippers. With a view of the Bonn Münster, the Beethoven monument and the historic post office building, one can take a break, relax and enjoy the sun. The Café Midi on the square also has outdoor seating. Festivities and events are held regularly on Münsterplatz.

  • Address Café Midi: Münsterplatz 11, 53111 Bonn
  • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 9am - midnight

Poppelsdorf Allee and castle

If you like it a little quieter, but still want to be close to the hustle and bustle of the city center, then the lawn in front of the Poppelsdorf Castle is the place to be. On warm days you can see people lying in hammocks or on blankets spread out on the green grass. Those who prefer to enjoy the sun while seated can do so in the "Nees" café, which is located directly on the lawn in front of the castle next to the Botanical Gardens.

  • Address Café Nees: Meckenheimer Allee 169, 53115 Bonn
  • Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 12 to midnight, Sunday from 10am - 6pm

Altstadt (Old Town)

In the Old Town of Bonn, it’s also nice to spend some time around Breite Straße and Heerstraße. Numerous cafés and pubs offer outdoor catering day and night. During the cherry blossom season in April, the ambience is very special. But the Old Town at this time of year is also a tourist magnet.
