Bonn/Region. Check out the many festivals and markets this weekend, from the Wine Blossom Fest to the Friedrichstrasse Festival to the Art of Living Fest in Remagen. For IBIS alumni and friends, you won’t want to miss the annual fête. And the Rheinaue flea market will surely have a thing or two for bargain seekers.

BONN

Nighttime opening of the Botanical Garden: It’s not often that one gets to go inside the Botanical Gardens in the dark. Tours (in German) will be offered Friday evening at 7:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. The new Monsoon House is also open for the first time. Botanical Gardens at Poppelsdorf Castle, go to main entrance in front on Meckenheimer Allee 169, 3 euros admission, discounted rate of 1 euro for those who qualify

IBIS Summer Fete and Alumni Reunion: Independent Bonn International School celebrates the diversity of cultures from around the world and the end of the school year. Featuring the IBIS choir, Didgeridoo Club, Didge World Music, jazz dance and modern African dance by “Issa Sow”. In small pavilions, guests can quench their thirst, enjoy a barbecue and traditional foods from 20 different nations (including Asian / India buffet) - cooked by parents from the school. Flea market in the Rheinaue: It’s time for the next big flea market in the Rheinaue Park. It’s one of the largest in Germany and is held every third Saturday of the month from March through October, attracting numerous visitors, dealers and bargain seekers. Rheinaue Park, Ludwig-Erhard-Allee, 8 am - 6 pm

2nd Bonn Civil Protection Day: The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, the Bonn Fire Dept. and voluntary civil protection organizations show their diverse range of services in the areas of self-help, first aid and firefighting; with sample drills at 12 and 3pm, Münsterplatz in Bonn city center, 10 am - 5 pm

Friedrichstrasse Festival: Area shops present themselves with musical entertainment and attractive offers; including a graffiti initiative of the Beethoven-Haus for young people from 12 years, 3 to 6 pm, in the vacant shop at Bonngasse 21; there will be lots of music, food and wine and a raffle, further information at www.friedrichstrasse-bonn.de, Friedrichstrasse, 11 am

Semmel's Hot Shots: Since the group was founded in 1976, they have become one of the most popular jazz bands in Bonn.  Their swinging music always makes for a good mood, at the beer garden of the Park Restaurant Rheinaue, Ludwig-Erhard-Allee 20, 2-5 pm, (0228) 37 40 30

Fish Market Cologne: Once a month, the fish market in Cologne is open. In the Tanzbrunnen, visitors can buy fresh fish from around 70 sellers. Fresh oysters, grilled shrimp and fried fish are all on offer. But for those who are not fish fans, there is also cheese, wine, cold cuts, fruit and vegetables, not to flowers and baked goods, hand-made arts and crafts like jewelry or leather goods. 11 am - 6pm, Tanzbrunnen, Rheinparkweg 1, Cologne, more information at: www.koeln.de.
