Viktoria underpass Unknown people secretly paint tunnel in Bonn

Bonn · Overnight, so to say, one of the least attractive underpasses in Bonn has been transformed. Unknown persons have painted the tunnel white and decorated it with photos.

A narrow, dark alley for pedestrians leads under the railway tracks between Thoma Straße and Endenicher Straße. Unknown people have painted this tunnel completely white and decorated it with photos, probably at night. A total of 60 paper printouts in various sizes and with different pictures are now glued onto the Viktoria underpass, although one or two of the pictures are probably already missing.

When the GA asked on Wednesday, the city knew nothing about the “art gallery” in the tunnel, but said it would look at the underpass this Thursday.

The city had announced at the end of 2017 that it wanted to widen the underpass and to both improve the lighting and make it accessible to the disabled. At a citizens’ meeting shortly before Christmas, a preferred alternative was developed, which, according to the press office, is currently being voted on within the administration and should ideally be debated in committee before the summer break. However, even then it was said that implementation should not be expected before 2019.

One pedestrian or another slows down his walk through the underpass or even stops briefly to look at the photos. Again and again, young women and men are depicted together or alone, sometimes it looks like a theatre group, sometimes like the documentation for an art project. In between hang a sensual view of the sea and a half-eaten wrap. Street art with or without a theme? It really doesn’t matter. The main thing is something is happening here.
