Rockfall on the L331 Traffic chaos between Königswinter and Ittenbach

KÖNIGSWINTER · Currently there is some traffic chaos on the L331 between Königswinter and Ittenbach. The Landesbetrieb Straßen NRW closed the road for an indefinite period due to a rockfall.

The traffic chaos in the Siebengebirge was „perfect“ on Tuesday afternoon even before the onset of rush-hour traffic: After a rockfall, the Landesbetrieb Straßen NRW closed one side on the Ferdinand-Mülhens-Straße (L331), which connects the old town of Königswinter with Ittenbach, just below the Margarethenhöhe. "The closure will initially be for an indefinite period," said Sabrina Kieback, spokeswoman for the regional office, in response to a GA enquiry.

In the morning, according to Kieback, "two larger boulders" had detached themselves from a slope and had fallen onto the road. The demolition point is about 100 meters behind the Margarethenhöhe bus stop in the direction of the valley. "No one was hurt," said Kieback.

The speaker was not able to say whether the heavy rain of the past days could have caused the rockfall. "An expert is currently on site to examine the rock slope. We expect the results to be available in the course of Wednesday morning," Kieback commented on the GA. Only then can it be foreseen which safety measures will have to be taken and how long the closure will have to apply.

Until then, construction site traffic lights will regulate traffic and one lane will remain closed. The State Office recommends that road users who are familiar with the region avoid the area if at all possible.
