Traffic disruptions expected Students demonstrate in Bonn for climate protection

Bonn · Nearly 500 school students were out demonstrating in Bonn's city center on Friday. Their theme "Fridays for Future" is all about environmental and climate protection. A different kind of demonstration is planned for Saturday.

"We are here, we are loud because you are stealing our future," chanted the young people, including many students from the region. The young demonstrators were then expected to march along a route through the city, with minor traffic obstructions expected.

The demonstrators planned to go from Münsterplatz via Hofgarten to Adenauerallee and on to the banks of the Rhine. From there, they would head to the United Nations Square at the WCCB, where a final rally was planned for around 2 pm.

Students in other cities have also organized demonstrations, calling for more environmental and climate protection. Officially, their absence from class is considered as unexcused absenteeism. But many students reported to the GA that teachers and school administrators were on their side and had even encouraged them to take part in the demonstrations.

In at least nine cities in NRW, pupils, students and trainees planned to take part in the “Strike for the Climate” on Friday. Demonstrations during regular school hours are also planned in Bielefeld and Düsseldorf.

These strikes in support of climate protection are planned in more than 50 cities throughout Germany. The demonstrations follow the example of the Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who has been protesting against climate policy in the Swedish parliament every Friday for months. Since mid-December, such school strikes have taken place weekly in several countries.

Another demonstration in Bonn on Saturday

On Saturday, a demonstration on the anniversary of the military assault on Afrin, Syria will also take place in Bonn's pedestrian zone. The organizer expects up to 300 participants, who will gather at Münsterplatz from 3 p.m. and then continue on the following route through the city center: Vivatsgasse, Kasernenstrasse, Friedrichstrasse, Wenzelgasse, Markt, Am Hof. The event ends at 7 p.m. on Münsterplatz.
