Bonn/Region · Heat records have been set in Bonn this summer, rarely have the temperatures been so high. But on Thursday it could be over. A storm front could move in, bringing some severe weather and heavy rains.
It is the new heat record for the year 2018: Exactly 39.1C/ 102.4F degrees was measured on Tuesday at 4:15pm at the weather station of the University of Bonn in Endenich. But there could be a temporary end to the heat on Thursday. According to meteorological services, heavy rain, hail and strong winds are possible throughout Germany.
"From noon on Thursday, in the east (of Germany), in conditions with extremely hot air, some very violent isolated storms are forming," says Matthias Habel, press spokesman for WetterOnline. The German Weather Service also points out that there is an increased risk of severe weather, it expects wind speeds of around 100 kilometers per hour. According to WetterOnline, a broad thunderstorm front will pass through in the evening. The temperatures are expected to reach between 19 and 29 degrees Celsius.
Overnight into Friday, it should cool down to 14 degrees, while during the day temperatures could reach up to 26C in the sunshine. Saturday is expected to be sunny and with temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius, not quite as hot as on the past few days. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to climb to 32 degrees.
The whole summer, especially July, has already achieved some records: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), it was the fifth warmest July since 1881 when regular temperature measurements began - with only the years 2006, 1994, 1983 and 2010 being warmer. On average, July temperatures were 20.2 degrees. This is 3.3 degrees more than the value of the internationally valid reference period of 1961 to 1990. There were many so-called tropical nights where temperatures did not dip below 20C.
In terms of sunshine hours, July 2018 came in second place since records began in 1951. Instead of an average of 212 hours, the sun shone 305 hours, according to DWD. With about 40 liters of precipitation per square meter, on the national average it also rained only about half of the normal amount for July.
