Grand Hotel Renovations begin on the Petersberg

Siebengebirge · The Grand Hotel on the Petersberg is being prepped for a major makeover. In a couple weeks, work will start on a 35 million euro renovation which will take place over a 15-month period.

The hotel will remain open during the construction. Major renovations are about to get underway on the Petersberg. In 14 days, a wall will be erected between the north and south wings of the hotel so work can begin on the north wing. Cost of the renovations is 35 million euro and the work is expected to take 15 months. Petersberg, the former official guest house of the federal government is now the Steigenberger Grand Hotel.

It will remain open during the renovations. Work was actually scheduled to being in spring of 2016 but there were delays due to planning challenges. Still, project director Joachim Burdack of the Federal Agency for Real Estate (Bima), says “We will definitely be finished in fall of 2018, even if I can’t name an exact date at this time.”

One of the aims of new hotel director, Michael Kain, is to turn the gallery into a breakfast room, and one of the nicest rooms in the hotel. From there, one has a beautiful view of the Drachenfels. Kain said it was a very charming room for hotel guests and they would also make it easier to reach so that guests didn’t have to go such a long way to access it.

The complete makeover of the hotel will result in a clear separation between the hotel area and the events facilities. Hotel rooms will be modernized and there will be 112 double rooms, an increase from the current 99. Those rooms will have 30 - 45 square meters of space. There will also be nine suites between 70 and 90 square meters, and a presidential suite with 230 square meters. During the renovation process, 50 percent of the hotel capacity will be available.

The restaurants, bistros and public areas will also be renovated and modernized. The wellness area will be expanded by 30 to 40 percent, and the bar will become three times its current size. So far, the Biergarten is already one successful building block of the overall project. Hikers and bicyclists are drawn to the Biergarten while the bistro attracts older residents, according to Kain.
