500 oak trees planted in Kottenforst

KOTTENFORST. This week employees of Deutsche Post DHL Group planted around 500 new trees in the Kottenforst, which is supported under the EU Life+Nature Conservation project "Villewälder - Wald und Wasserwelten" (forests and water worlds). The company approached the Regional Forestry Office last year with the idea and planted a number of oaks; this year the cooperation has continued. The initiative is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s GoGreen environmental protection program, which aims to reduce all logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050 and to plant one million trees a year. A total of 80 employees were deployed over three days in small groups, each planting five oaks, on the assumption that at least one of these will survive. According to Klaus Striepen who leads the Villewälder project, “if you plant 500 trees on one hectare of forest like this, in 30 to 40 years you would still have 100 grand oaks. And other tree species would come by themselves.” (Original text: Stefan Kopp)

Post Tower and UN light up in orange

BONN. On Saturday as dusk fell the Post Tower, UN Tower, Deutsche Welle building and the Sinn department store glowed orange for one evening. These highly visible Bonn buildings joined the worldwide "Orange your City" campaign, initiated by women's organisations around the world to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In addition to the UN Women group, two Zonta Clubs are active in Bonn with many UN employees amongst the enthusiastic members. The Bonn club is participating in the campaign for the first time. There are already plans for further Bonn buildings to get involved next year. Under the motto "Zonta says no to violence", Zonta representative Adelheid Feilcke chaired a panel discussion in the lounge of the Post Tower, Kurt-Schumacher-Straße on Saturday afternoon. Elisabeth Auchter-Mainz, NRW victim protection officer, Katja Schülke, deputy equal opportunities officer of the city of Bonn, and Conny Schulte from the counselling centre against sexual violence in Bonn also took part in the discussions. No Christmas market in Oberkassel this year

OBERKASSEL. The ninth Christmas market in Oberkassel, due to take place on the second weekend in Advent and billed as the “second largest market on the Beuel side of the Rhine” has been cancelled. Helmut Priebe, the driving force behind the association ‘Förderverein Weihnachtsmarkt Bonn-Oberkassel’ explains this is due to a lack of personnel and inability to cover the costs of running the market. The pre-Christmas festivities were due to take place in the park at the Magdalenenkreuz, on the site of the fairground in Oberkassel. St. Nikolaus, his servant Ruprecht and even an angel were all going to pay a visit.

The association remains in place for the time being and is planning to start again next year. "We could organise the Christmas market back on the market square and in the Bürgerpark, perhaps combined with a music event and possibly together with a ‘Christmas Evening’ with local advertisers”, says Priebe. After the Bürgerverein (citizen’s group) stopped organising the event a few years ago, the market relocated away from the town centre to the fairground site and the Werbegemeinschaft Oberkassel (advertising association WOK) pulled out.
