UN Climate Secretariat Mexican Ambassador to succeed Figueres

Bonn · A likely successor to Christiana Figueres has been named by the UN Secretary-General.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced his intention to appoint Patricia Espinosa Cantellano of Mexico as the next Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). She is currently Mexico’s Ambassador to Germany and she was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2006 and 2013. She has more than 30 years of experience at the highest levels in international relations and has specialized in climate change, global governance, sustainable development and protection of human rights.

Cantellano is to succeed Christiana Figueres, a native of Costa Rica. Figueres served at that top position for six years but had announced that she would not seek another term. The nomination of Cantellano by Ban Ki-moon must still be confirmed by member states but it is believed that she will be approved.
