Between Bonn-Nord and Endenicher Ei Hybrid solution for ailing „Millepede“

Bonn · The planning politicians are not entirely happy with the solution to renovate and extend the „millepede“ road between Bonn-Nord and Endenicher Ei. But because time is pressing, they voted for the proposed ideas. The City Council also voted for the Hybrid solution.

Beforehand Thomas Ganz, who is responsible for the Bonn motorways at Straßen NRW, insisted: „The route between Bonn-Nord and Endenicher Ei has to be renewed by 2022.“ It is at this stage only a proposal for the state company acting as the developer.

The City Council also voted for this solution, wanting a high level route in the current construction. At Immenburgstraße near the supermarket, the motorway is supposed to lead into a trough position, to be able to bypass the street. It’s some kind of city repair which the city planners expect to be a good development. With a broad majority the commission decided that the City Council will approach the state company with its demands. The noise protection needs to be as transparent and unobtrusive as possible.

The coalition and the SPD want to consider a new, faster, eligible bike traffic route parallel to the motorway between Lievelingsweg and Endenicher Straße as part of the six-lane extension. Other important points of detail: The access road in Endenich facing South onto Reuterstraße and the A565 towards Meckenheim. And an access road at Lievelingsweg in both directions and not only towards Meckenheim like now. Hybrid version cheapest The new „Millepede“ is supposed to cost 206 million Euro.

The hybrid version is among the cheapest of the eleven proposals. The trough idea (tunnelling) would have cost three times as much. Ludwig Burgsmüller (CDU) spoke of Bonn as the „piggy bank of the state company“. Ganz replied that the federal state is the client and the regional state is only the developer. The Citizen’s union voted for the tunnel solution, which would not only have been more expensive but would have taken a lot longer too: seven instead of five-and-a-half years.

According to Ganz, the project is tightly scheduled. Until the end of 2019 the planning assessment has to be done, the final decisions have to be made by 2020 to relieve the old construction until 2022 and to move the traffic to the new construction then. And what happens if citizens file legal action against the extension? Ganz: „We hope that won’t happen and count on transparency and information in the preliminary stages."
