Accident immediately after take-off Glider crashes in Königswinter

Königswinter · A glider crashed near the Eudenbach airfield. Trees in a wood close to the airfield slowed the crash and prevented anything worse happening.

A glider crashed in the afternoon shortly after taking off from the Eudenbach airfield. At around 4pm, the 60-year-old pilot was towed into the air on a rope, which he then released himself. A few minutes later the glider could no longer be seen in the sky. Eye witnesses therefore immediately called the emergency services for help.

“We assume that the thermals and the weather conditions led to pilot error. However, this is currently only a theory,” explained a spokeswoman for Bonn police. The pilot landed with his glider a few hundred metres from the airfield in woodland and was able to free himself from the aircraft. He was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter for further treatment as a precaution.

Bonn criminal police are investigating the incident. “There are other possible causes of the accident. Therefore the glider will be thoroughly examined,” said the police spokeswoman.
