Cologne · Part of terminal 1 at Cologne/Bonn airport was evacuated for two and a half hours on Saturday after hand luggage was not properly checked.

There was cause for alarm at Cologne/Bonn airport on Saturday after the federal police evacuated the security area on the departures level of terminal 1. The airport said a passenger whose hand luggage had not been completely checked had got into the security area.

The incident happened at 7.30am. According to regulations, everyone in the security area must leave and then undergo another check.

Around 500 people were affected by the evacuation. Flights were not halted and take-offs at terminal 2 and landings continued. Eleven departures were transferred from terminal 1 to terminal 2 resulting in delays.
