Support from Cologne local government Euro 135,000 for rebuilding of “Federal kiosk"

Bonn · The Cologne local government is providing Euro 135,000 to support the rebuilding of the “Federal kiosk” in the former government quarter. The kiosk was regarded as an unofficial political meeting place.

The return of a landmark is approaching: the Cologne local government is contributing support in the amount of Euro 135,000 for the rebuilding of the kiosk opposite the Bonn Bundesrat (Federal Council) building. The money is going to the Association for Historic Sales Pavillions, which has devoted itself to the rescue and preservation of the “Federal kiosk.” There is apparently no date as yet for the reopening.

The kiosk was built in the 1950s in the immediate vicinity of the Bundestag (Federal Parliament). Many generations of politicians used it for their daily needs. As such, the kiosk was the unofficial political meeting place and is a listed monument because of its characteristic shape and its “parliamentary past.”

The kiosk had to vacate its original location during the course of the construction of the World Conference Centre Bonn (WCCB) in 2006 and will, after years in temporary storage, now be restored to its original condition and then placed on Heussallee, not far from its original location.

Opening date not yet known

Last summer, the city council decided to provide lessee Jürgen Rausch with a space on the corner of Heussallee and Kurt-Schumacher-Allee in the vicinity of the former parliament buildings. The city will bear the costs of connecting utilities. It will also enter into a leasehold agreement with Rausch regulating the ownership status of the kiosk.

The local government did not say when the kiosk will move and reopen. Leaseholder Rausch had initially still hoped for a return last year.
