Major events should still be possible District government places Rheinaue under preservation order

BONN · The district government of Cologne will designate the Rheinaue Park in Bonn as a historical preservation site. The announcement was made by the City of Bonn.

The district government and the City of Bonn agree that the Rheinaue Park in the center of Bonn has great significance for the city and its citizens, according to a joint statement. "In order to ensure that future generations can experience this unique park, we will protect this park as a Baudenkmal (a site or building put under historical preservation orders)", Gisela Walsken, head of the district government is quoted as saying in the statement.

In the joint statement, Walsken went on to say that despite the preservation order, the use of the park for many diverse events should not be threatened. Recreation, sports and leisure activities and big events could of course continue on there.

"It was important to us to preserve the different uses of the Rhineaue Park as well as to enable further development of the park in the future," said Bonn's Mayor Ashok Sridharan. This was achieved in a corresponding agreement with the district government. Structural changes to the park in the future will have to be closely coordinated between the City of Bonn and the district government.

The park area under preservation includes the former National Horticultural Show grounds from 1979 as well as the connections to the adjacent river promenades and neighborhoods. As one of the largest landscaped gardens in Germany, it is important for the history of garden architecture and garden art as well as for the history of the City of Bonn.

Until 1969, Bonn and Bad Godesberg were independent cities and the park had become the central and connecting green space between them. The park was also crucial for the urban development of the former federal capital of Bonn, according to the city. (Orig. text: ga.de, Translation: ck)
