Cyber Monday and Black Friday 2018 Discount week attracts bargain hunters

Bonn · German retailers are expecting extra revenue in the billions of euros leading up to the weekend. Here is what Bonn shoppers should know about "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday”.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday - discount days imported from the USA have found their way into German online sales. According to a consumer survey, the German Retail Association (HDE) expects additional revenue of around 2.4 billion euros on these days.

Bargain hunters in Germany are starting to take more notice of these special deal days. In 2017, 24 percent of German online shoppers took advantage of a Black Friday deal. On Cyber Monday it was 18 percent. But how much the customer really benefits from these deals is controversial. Idealo.de, a website specializing in price comparisons, determined that of 500 products offered on Black Friday 2017, only 381 actually cost slightly less than in the previous month.

Where are the Black Friday discounts?

Amazon: With the slogan: "Shop for Christmas presents at good prices right now" the company is planning a whole Cyber-Monday week with tens of thousands of offers in Germany starting November 19.

Mediamarkt: On "Red Friday" - tailored to match the corporate color - consumers can look forward to special deals from Mediamarkt. A look at the online shop should be particularly worthwhile. The first offers will already be published on Thursday, November 22, starting at 8 pm.

Douglas: The perfumery Douglas calls it "Beauty Friday". People who love fragrances and cosmetics are lured to the online shop with discounts. Until then, loyal Douglas customers will already receive a 20 percent discount with a voucher code.

Aldi and Lidl: Even the chain discounters are taking part in the week of shopping deals. Aldi offers electronic products in its online shop under the caption "Black Week". Lidl will offer online deals as well. It will also have bargains in its stores and on Friday, there will be specials on electrical appliances for everything ranging from coffee machines to beard hair trimmers.

Karstadt and the like: Even in many Bonn branches of the big chains you can find good deals this week. For example, Sinn (formerly SinnLeffers) and Karstadt are taking part in Black Friday.

Consumer protection warning

The consumer protection agency advises to keep a clear head when looking for good deals. Price comparisons using search engines could be more useful to get a good price than trusting the special offers on the day of the promotion. Consumer protection also warns about getting too excited over deals. This can be exploited by swindlers who collect money using fake online shops without having the intention of selling any goods. The Federal Office for Information Security recommends, among other things, that two-factor authentication be used when registering in online shops.
