Roadworks at Römerplatz Construction on roundabout begins

Rüngsdorf · Finally it has begun. Construction workers have started preparing for the new turning circle at Römerplatz. Temporary stoplights have been set up and some side streets are closed.

After years of discussion about whether or not Römerplatz should get a turning circle, construction has begun. Preparation work is taking place this week, including digging to find out where cable and other lines are buried. Bike stands and planters are being removed. Temporary stoplights will guide traffic on Ubierstraße and Konstantinstraße, and some side roads will be blocked. This also applies to buses which will be taking alternative routes.

If all goes according to plan, the project should be finished in June this summer. The turning circle will connect the following streets: Ubierstraße, Rheinstraße, Konstantinstraße, Karl-Finkelnberg Straße and Rüngsdorfer Straße. Cäsariusstraße will not have access to the roundabout.

Inside the roundabout will be a green area with trees planted. It is expected that there will be more space for outdoor seating at local restaurants, as well as two parking places.

Originally, the Römerplatz project was to begin after the Bad Godesberg tunnel had been refurbished. Because the tunnel project was delayed until 2018 so that it would be open during the World Climate Conference this year, the Römerplatz turning circle was moved up on the schedule. The total cost of the project is estimated at 790,000 euro. (Orig. text: Ayla Jacob, translated by Carol Kloeppel)
