Bonn central train station Breakthrough for new shopping center

Bonn.  · There could be light at the end of the tunnel for a proposed new shopping center at the Bonn central train station.

After years of debate, discussion and attempts at doing something to improve the area around the Bonn Hauptbahnhof (central train station), finally it seems there is real progress and a good chance for a modern facelift. The investor Ten Brinke Group has collected notarized sales contracts with all of the owners in the area so it can obtain the building space needed to build a new shopping center. It would be called the Maximillian Center. Now all it needs is permission from the City of Bonn to obtain the required land which is owned by the City. A plan will be presented to the City Council on June 30. If they give a green light, Ten Brinke will begin tearing down the old buildings in January of 2017.

Georg Fenninger from the leadership team of political party Christian Democratic Union (CDU), says he is optimistic that the project will be realized. Together with the new building project across the street, Urban Soul, the Maximillian Center would give the city a whole new look for people coming into Bonn. Ten Brinke plans to tear down the old buildings from the 70’s and construct a new four story shopping center. Passages to the train and bus stations would also be modernized.

British fashion retailer, Primark looks promising to be the anchor of the Maximillian Center if all goes well. When everything falls into place as hoped, demolition work could begin in January of 2017, and things could move quickly. The construction period is allowed to take one and half to two years maximum.
