Traffic jam on Friedrich-Ebert-Allee B9 closure creates traffic mess

Bonn · Part of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee has been closed off since early Tuesday morning because cancer-causing agents were found in the old road surface. Motorists need patience to get through.

As if we could not have imagined it: The closure of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee on Tuesday morning led to traffic chaos. Workers are replacing the road surface on the two lanes from Ollenhauerstraße and the road construction is expected to continue until Sunday. Only motorists traveling in the direction of Bad Godesberg are affected.

Besides the construction itself, another cause of the back-up is that drivers have been ignoring the detour sign, causing a long back-up. The alternate route was to make a right turn off the roundabout to Maria-Kahle-Allee, and then return to the B9 via Oscar-Romero, Nahum-Goldmann and Olof-Palme-Allee. However, only a few drivers have been choosing this route.

A construction worker at the Ollenhauerstraße junction just shook his head, “This has been going on all day.” The problem is that no left turn is allowed at the railway crossing before the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in the direction of Godesberg. Some had to drive back to the “museum mile” while others waited for the train track gates to open so they could travel south through Dottendorf or Friesdorf. For workers at firms like Postbank or Telekom, it is quite tricky because their headquarters cannot be reached directly during the road construction.

Cancer-causing building materials

Originally, it was planned to replace the road surface on the last holiday weekend. But a soil analysis in July revealed cancer-causing materials in the substructure. It is contaminated with PAH. PAHs are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and have been proven to be carcinogenic. Tar contains a high percentage of PAH and was used for constructing roads in earlier years. Since the 1970’s, asphalt has replaced tar for building roads.

Despite the traffic mess, there is some good news for drivers. Nobody is racing past the radar device which stands near the Bundeskunsthalle, ready to zap speeders.
