Water rescue Youth capsize on the Rhine

Remagen · Young sailors were pulled from the cold river on Sunday afternoon.

Three youth were out on a sailboat on the Rhine River Sunday afternoon when it capsized near Remagen. Rescue workers from Unkel, Erpel and Remagen were alerted and responded to the rescue operation. The youth were floating in the cold water while awaiting help.

The Coast Guard of Andernach said the youth had been sailing as part of an annual regatta of their sailing club, taking them from Remagen to Unkel. It was apparently not uncommon in this event that one or the other boat would capsize.

Because there were so many boats on the water at the time the sailboat capsized, there were plenty of people who saw the young people in the river and responded immediately. Boaters pulled them out of the water before the rescue personnel got to the scene. No one was hurt. A helicopter had been called to help with the rescue but was not needed. The sailboat was towed back by a Fire Department boat to the Oberwinter harbor.
