Preparations underway Work starts at Bonn main train station

Bonn · Work has started at the so-called Nordfeld area in front of Bonn main train station. Drivers, rail passengers and cyclists will have to adapt to changes. Here’s an overview.

The city says the overground car park at the Bonner Loch was only in use until Sunday, 19 November. It has been closed since Monday for the preparatory works at the Nordfeld site and will then disappear completely.

The “Developer Projektentwicklung” company from Düsseldorf is preparing the build. The company presented the construction project, which by their own admission is complicated, to residents on Monday evening. Project developer Ronald Pietsh compared the building work to “open heart surgery”.

The re-opening of the Marktgarage could somewhat ease the problem of searching for a parking space. Parking spaces on Rabinstraße can also be used until the end of the year. They will no longer be available from 1 January, according to information from the city.

Building works to begin in the next few days

A commercial building and a new hotel will be built on the so-called Nordfeld at the main station. This complex (“Urban Soul”) stretches almost all the way to Thomas-Mann-Straße. There will also be a parking garage on Rabinstraße, with further businesses on the ground floor. Construction of a new staircase opposite the main station, towards Rabinstraße, started a few days ago. In the middle of April, Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan approved the previously notarised land purchase agreement between the city and Urban Soul Development GmbH.

According to the project company, construction fences will be erected on the car park in the next few days and workers will start to dismantle the car park. The city of Bonn said the construction fence would remain open in several places, as there are still several bicycles in places not designated by the city as “official bicycle stands.” The city asks owners to collect their bicycles by Friday 24 November. After that, owners will need to contact the site owners to get their bicycles. The city also warns that bicycles will be removed at the owners’ cost if, for example, they are blocking flood paths.

The project company then plans to extend the fence further into the Bonner Loch in the next few weeks. The new staircase to Bonner Loch should be accessible in January. Until then, there will be further restrictions: the temporary lift in the Bonner Loch will be removed, meaning direct access to the ground floor will only be possible using the Deutsche Bahn lifts.

Exhibition for citizens until the end of December

The so-called Südtunnel (south tunnel) will also be closed from Monday 27 November. From then on, rail passengers will no longer be able to get to the platforms through the underpass from the bus station. Commuters and travellers should instead use the overland route to get to the platforms from the bus station or should use the Nordtunnel (north tunnel) under Poststraße.

The actual building of the project is scheduled by building planners for the first quarter of 2018. As well as the car park, the former “Gabi” police station and the public toilets are to be dismantled and the station car park renovated during the building works. Citizens can visit the former “Zeeman” shop premises until 23 December, which will display plans, films and a model of the Urban Soul project. This exhibition is open from Wednesday to Saturday between 3pm and 6pm.
