Bonn museums Winter weather is museum weather

Bonn · The Bonn museums are more than satisfied with the number of visitors over the Christmas period.

Peter Hoffmann, Press Officer for the Haus der Geschichte (history museum) in Bonn aptly explained the reason for the number of visitors over the Christmas period: “Winter weather is museum weather.” The Haus der Geschichte and other Bonn museums on the 'Museumsmeile' were very well visited over the entire Christmas period. Professor Stephan Berg, Director of the Kunstmuseum (art museum) in Bonn said that they welcomed between 400 and 500 visitors every day, and that the number of visitors over Christmas was often well above the usual numbers. The visitors to Bonn's museums are not only local residents but also come from further afield, some from as far as 400km away. Over the Christmas period many people from the Netherlands and Belgium also came to visit the museums in Bonn.

There are currently four exhibitions running at the Bundeskunsthalle, one about the river Rhine, another entitled 'Touchdown' about Down Syndrome and a third focusing on cultural history entitled 'Eine kurze Geschichte der Menschlichkeit' (A short history of humanity). The fourth exhibition 'Wand vor Wand' (Wall before wall) by the artist Gregor Schneider has also attracted many visitors in the winter months. The Bundeskunsthalle has also been running guided tours and a workshop about the Rhine exhibition for children and younger visitors.

Although the Haus der Geschichte did not offer any special events over Christmas, a special holiday programme is currently being planned for the Easter and summer holidays. Teenage visitors over the Christmas period enjoyed filling out a quiz on German politics and learning more about German history from the exhibition on the second world war. At the Kunstmuseum, guided tours of the permanent collection were on offer over Christmas as well as tours of the exhibition 'Unheimlich' (The Uncanny Home) which presents works by artists including Edvard Munch and Max Beckmann.

The art museum is planning a children's event for the Easter holidays with the theme 'Luftschlösser, Ritterburg, Stadhaus und Museumsbau' which translates as 'castles in the sky, knight's castles, town hall and museum'. The Bundeskunsthalle will be offering a children's Easter programme as part of the photographic exhibition by Katharina Sieverding which opens on 11 March.
