Public transit, airports, childcare What you need to know about the strikes

Bonn/Region · German public sector strikes will be widespread on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the region, local transit, the Cologne/Bonn Airport and some kindergartens will be affected.

Labor union Verdi is exerting pressure on employers in advance of the likely decisive wage round. Beginning on Tuesday, the warning strikes will be widespread, requiring citizens to face significant disruptions. Affected are all areas of public service at federal and local level, according to Verdi.

Massive disruptions in bus and rail

Public transit is included in the strike on Tuesday. The SWB Bonn (transit authorities) and the KVB (Cologne transit authorities) say urban rail and buses will not be running. A few buses operated by their subcontractors may run sporadically. Lines 16 and 18 between Bonn and Cologne will not run at all. Pickets are expected to block exits at railway stations.

Some other buses will be underway in the city. The RSVG (Rhine-Sieg transit) runs from the right bank of the Rhine, some lines going into the city, and the RVK (Cologne regional transit) runs from the left side of the Rhine. Both companies believe their workers will not strike as their drivers have tariff agreements. But they expect delays due to full buses and busy traffic.

A Bonn transit authority from SWB said she expected they would be back in operation on Wednesday morning. Passengers are not entitled to reimbursement of travel costs if they have to use alternative means of travel such as taxis. For those who want to go to Cologne/Bonn Airport, one can take a regional train from Beuel train station. Deutsche Bahn, Mittelrheinbahn (MRB) and National Express are also not affected by the strike.

RSVG is currently assuming their bus routes will run on Tuesday, but the ones that are operated together with SWB will be affected: the 640 completely, for the 550 sporadic trips are expected and the SB55 will run a good number of trips.

For motorists there is some good news, the closure of a lane on the 565 autobahn in the direction of Meckenheim has been postponed. Bonn’s waste management company, Bonnorange will strike.

Kindergartens stay closed

The trade union Komba is also planning a warning strike. Several kindergartens and day cares are expected to be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The following day care centers are closed according to Komba: St. Mark's Square, Estermannstraße, Herpenstraße, Waldenburger Ring 30, Waldenburger Ring 44, Domhof, Ellesdorfer Straße, Maria Montessori Allee, Heinrich-Schneiders-Strasse, Weidenweg, Alte Bonner Straße, Ossietzkystraße, Graurheindorfer Straße, Annabergerstrasse and Limpericher street. In other parts of Bonn and Rhine-Sieg, there will also be closures. The youth welfare office has organized emergency groups and set up a hotline for all parents from 8 am to 4 pm: (0228) 77 55 44. The city has also set up a hotline for parents: (0228) 77 55 44 from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday.

Citizen services are not expected to be affected in Bonn. In Bonn, however, Komba will hold its biggest demonstration with 7,000 participants. It begins at 9:30am at Stiftsplatz and goes to the Markt, where there will be a rally at 1pm.

Warning strikes at Telekom

Verdi has also announced strikes at Telekom on Tuesday. Customer service at Telekom is expected to be affected most of all, according to Verdi on Monday. Airport strikes Verdi announced a strike for Tuesday at Cologne/Bonn Airport. Ground service personnel and some airport fire brigade are participating.

On Monday, 74 of 250 flights were already cancelled for Tuesday out of Cologne/Bonn Airport, including 12 Lufthansa and 62 Eurowings flights. More disruptions are expected as a result of the strikes. Frankfurt, Munich and Bremen Airports are also experiencing strikes and major disruptions.
