August 31 - September 2 Weekend tips for Bonn and the region

BONN/REGION · It looks like a big weekend for festivals and there are plenty to choose from, whether you enjoy arts and crafts, classical music, live bands or regional wines. And the flashlight concert is sure to be a hit with families.

1. Muffenale

Nestled in a narrow street of old timber-framed houses, it’s time for the popular festival called Muffenale. The 30th Muffenale, held in and around Muffendorfer Hauptstraße carries the theme "Art & Culinary," and runs from 11am to 7pm on Sunday, September 2. Visitors to the picturesque and charming little town will be able to purchase handmade arts and crafts, including jewelry, knitted and hand-sewn items, art and floral decorations. On the culinary side, “Rhenish Tapas”, specially baked items from the region, onion tart and early wine will be on offer, as well as Muffendorf Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Eifel sausages and Syrian specialties. For kids, there will be face painting and for everyone, it offers a glimpse into the courtyards of the historic houses. This year, for the first time, there will also be a stage with live music. 2. Beethoven Fest opening weekend

It’s the opening concert with “Beethoven’s Fifth” on August 31 at WCCB (tickets start at 43 euros). Held in conjunction with the event is “Ludwig’s Lounge on Friday” (tickets start at 89 euros). But if you want to see the opening concert for free, bring a blanket and picnic basket and enjoy the live broadcast at Bonn’s Marktplatz, starting at 8pm. There is also the opening of the installation “The Typewriter of the Future” at the WCCB, 12pm. On Saturday, the stage in Bonn city center belongs to young musicians, 12pm at Marktplatz and there is “Ludwig’s Lounge on Saturday” at 7.30pm, as well as an opportunity to see “The Ninth” under the stars with other Bonn residents, watching the big screen at Marktplatz, 7.30pm. On Sunday, there will also be an open air broadcast on Marktplatz at 6pm. Beethoven Fest Bonn will run from August 31 until September 29, with nearly 60 concerts in 25 locations. 3. Summer Festival final concert at the beer garden of the Park Restaurant Rheinaue

The open air concerts of the Summer Festival at the Rheinaue Park Restaurant are free of charge and the final concert of the series is on August 31, Friday: “Handmade: Oldies and rock classics” at 7.30pm. Even though the summer concert series comes to an end, on Sunday visitors can enjoy New Orleans, swing and jazz classics from 2 to 5pm; Ludwig-Erhard-Allee 20, Bonn.

4. Beuel Public Festival

This festival in Beuel city center runs for two days, September 1 and 2, Saturday and Sunday. Around 20,000 guests are expected. Visitors can expect a mix of music, theater, performance, delicious things to eat, and a variety of things on sale, including hand-made arts and crafts. On Saturday, activities will be concentrated in the area of the “Rathausvorplatz” (the town square in front of town hall) with a stage for live entertainment. At 11pm on Saturday the band “Heart & Soul” will play, and people can dance along. On Sunday, stores in the city center will be open for shopping from 1 to 6 pm; Beuel city center.

5. Wine festival and wine market in Ahrweiler

This is the largest and oldest wine festival on the Ahr. It is celebrated this year from August 31 to September 3. Stands open on Friday at 4pm. On Saturday, stands open at 10.30am and there will be live music from 7:30pm on the Marktplatz in the town center. On Sunday, stands open at 10.30am and at 2pm, it’s time for the Winemakers’ Parade. For 3 euros, visitors can get a wine festival glass and take part in a small prize game. De Joekels takes the stage at 5pm and Barlala at 7pm. Festival stands open on Monday at 5pm and it all comes to a close on Monday evening with a big fireworks over the town at 10pm. 6. Old Town Festival in Meckenheim

The Altstadt (Old Town) festival opens Friday with musical entertainment from the band Her Majesty at 7pm, The King Alive at 8.30pm. On Saturday, there is a varied program for children at 10.45am, cooking with children for children at 2pm, a game show with kids, presentation of carnival children, and music with the band Sir Williams at 7pm. On Sunday, stores will be open for shopping from 1 - 6pm and there will be more entertainment; Marktplatz in Meckenheim.

7. Flashlight concert at the Poppelsdorf Castle

The flashlight concert in Bonn on September 1, Saturday is an event for everyone, but especially for young people and families. In front of a unique backdrop, the band “Rumpelstil” plays their songs. When it is dark enough, everyone switches on their flashlight and the castle grounds becomes a sparkling sea of lights. The revenues will go to the charity organization Bunter Kreis Rheinland. It takes place on the grounds in front of the Poppelsdorfer castle, 8pm; Meckenheimer Allee 171, Bonn.

8. Stadtgarten (City garden) concerts

It could still be nice enough to sit outdoors in the Bonn city park this weekend and enjoy the late summer weather while listening to live music on Saturday evening. Gentree with Brit-folk-pop is on at 6.15pm; Galactic Superlords will rock you at 7.30pm; Electric Sandwich plays Krautrock at 8.45pm, all under open skies at the Stadtgarten am Alten Zoll, Adenauerallee, Bonn.

9. Film Nights on the roof of the Bundeskunsthalle

In good weather the films will be shown on the rooftop of the Bundeskunsthalle (National Art Museum), and in case of bad weather, the screenings will be moved indoors. The website indicates the films are shown in their original versions with German subtitles. On Friday, at 8.30 pm, it’s “The Square” about a Swedish museum director whose life is thrown out of control when his cell phone gets stolen. On Saturday at 8.30pm, it’s “Call me by your name” - a coming-of-age story and relationship drama which plays out in Italy, and on Sunday at 8:30pm, it’s "Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri" starring Frances McDormand as a mother seeking justice for her murdered daughter.
