Frosty start to the week Weather service warns of icy conditions in Bonn and the region

Bonn · The weather service warned of icy conditions on Monday morning after the return of winter to Bonn and the region. Yesterday was the coldest 18 March since records began in 1895.

There was new snow in Bonn and the region early on Sunday morning. The German weather service warned of icy conditions and drifting snow. A strong high over Scandinavia is causing the current wintry weather conditions, bringing Arctic continental air towards North Rhine-Westphalia.

The German weather service reported one to three centimetres of fresh snow in the Eifel and Siegerland by noon. There were also frosty temperatures during the day on Sunday. The thermometer did not climb above the two degrees mark. In the morning, around 7.30am, temperatures of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius were recorded in Bonn. The weather statistician Klaus Kosack reported this was the lowest temperature for 18 March since records began in 1895.

18 March 2018 therefore beat the current record holder of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius in 1936. This Sunday was also the third lowest temperature this month. With the cold snap at the end of February and beginning of March 2018, 1 March was the coldest day this month with a temperature of minus 6.4 degrees.

However, the outlook for the coming week provides some hope: sun and temperatures well above freezing during the day give hope that winter is finally over. In the south of Germany, by contrast, it will initially remain wintry.

Things are quite different in Greece, where the Athens weather office said local temperatures rose to about 30 degrees on Saturday. However, the warm southerly wind also brought fine dust from the Sahara, which was restricting visibility and affecting many people’s breathing.
