More space for headquarters Vapiano moves from Bonn to Cologne

Bonn · Restaurant chain Vapiano will move its headquarters from Kurt-Schmuacher-Straße in Bonn to Cologne near the Rhine River. It means a loss of 100 jobs in Bonn.

Beginning in October, the new address of the Vapiano head office will be “Im Zollhafen 2-4”, putting it in a hip area at the Rhine harbor in Cologne, not far from the Chocolate Museum. With that move, Bonn loses an employer and 100 jobs.

Johannes Mauss, Vapiano CEO, emphasized to General Anzeiger on Wednesday that “This is not a decision against Bonn.” Rather, the firm has experienced growth and their current space became too small. “Because we are bursting at the seams, we did a thorough search of the region of Cologne/Bonn to find a new building,” said Mauss. At the harbor in Cologne on the Rhine, they found “a dream location.”

The new space has room for not only the offices, but also a test kitchen, an international support center and a training academy. Vapiano currently has 180 restaurants in 32 countries across five continents. “We want to test out new concepts in the restaurant,” said Mauss. For the employees, it’s easier to just leave their offices and go downstairs if there are new applications like mobile payment that present technical problems.

Vapiano is the inventor of Fresh Casual Dining. Dishes are freshly prepared in front of the guests. Founder Georg Gerlach owns 30 percent of the business, and 26 percent belongs to Wella heirs, Gisa and Hans-Joachim Sander. The largest shareholder with 44 percent is Mayfair Asset Management.
