Bonn · In a chemical lab in the University of Bonn on Wednesday afternoon, metal phosphates were supposed to be produced in a standard procedure. Then there was a bang.

As the University of Bonn reported on Wednesday afternoon, two people were working at a metal phosphate production in what is normally a „standard procedure“ at the chemical lab in Bonn-Endenich— when there was a sudden bang. Both persons were injured in the accident.

University employees from neighbouring labs brought the injured persons out of the danger area and administered first aid. The emergency services were called. The injured were brought to hospitals for further treatment.

The affected lab area was evacuated, the fire brigade extinguished the smouldering fire. It is not yet clear, how the incident could occurr. There will be further investigations.

The University’s Rector, Michael Hoch, wished „both affected persons a speedy recovery“. He thanked the employees who came to help so courageously, administered first aid and called the emergency services“.

This is not the first incident at the chemical institutes of the Uni Bonn. In 2014, two research associates previously breathed in corrosive muriatic acid steam. In 2011, one research associate accidentally mixed substances together, unknowingly creating an explosive cocktail.
