Bonn-Center The future of the Mercedes star hangs in the balance

Bonn · On Friday, the iconic Mercedes star was removed from the roof of the Bonn-Center. Perhaps it will not be scrapped after all. Mercedes may have another use for it.

The Mercedes star on top of the Bonn-Center is no longer shining. The star, which can be seen for miles around, has been rotating every two minutes on the roof of the Bonn-Center for almost five decades. The steel star, a symbol of German economic power, became history last Friday.

Up to now, it was thought that the star would be scrapped. GA has learnt however, that Mercedes wants to check the condition of the star and then decide what will happen with it. In response to an enquiry from the General-Anzeiger, Charlotte Siegel from the Mercedes press office in Berlin said: “We are currently holding talks about further use of the star. Therefore, we ask for your understanding that we cannot say any more about it at the moment.”

The demolition work on the Bonn-Center has been running for several months. On 19 March the remaining concrete structure is expected to be blown up. The owner of the 16,000 m size plot of land – the Cologne company Art Invest – is planning to build a new office complex with over 60,000 m floor space – almost twice as large as the previous building. Further details about the plans are not yet known. Nor has the company issued any information about the future occupier(s) of the new building.
