Parkland after the Climate Conference The Rheinaue is back in Bonn’s hands

BONN · The Federal Ministry for the Environment has handed back the Rheinaue - the former site of the World Climate Conference COP 23 - to the city of Bonn in time for the start of the events season.

After various preparations, the renaturalization of the flower meadow in the Rheinaue could begin several weeks ago. According to the city, 59,000 square metres of lawn were restored. To this end, the fences around the former event grounds were retained to allow the newly laid turf to grow safely and securely. On Monday there was a handover of the areas with representatives of the city of Bonn, the appointed horticultural company and the Federal Ministry for the Environment as organiser of the conference, as well as its general contractor.

“We are happy to be able to make the Rheinaue available to citizens again in time for Rhine in Flames,” said the Federal Environment Secretary Jochen Flasbarth. The works were made more difficult by the frost at the start of April and had to be halted. According to the city of Bonn, the area is now usable again, apart from a few outlying areas on which further work is needed in the coming days.
