16-year-old suspect Syrian teen reportedly instructed to place bomb in garbage bin

Cologne · New information has come to light following the arrest of a young Syrian refugee. He was reportedly told to plant a bomb in a garbage bin.

More details have been released after a 16-year-old Syrian refugee was detained in connection with alleged plans for a bomb attack. On Friday, the Cologne newspaper “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” reported that the youth was instructed by an Islamic State (IS) recruiter in an internet chat to place a bomb in a garbage bin.

According to the report, the youth was told to make a bomb loaded with nails and place it in an area where lots of people gather - “there, where people throw their trash away.”

Reports from the “Bild” newspaper and Cologne newspaper “Kölnische Rundschau” say that in the warrant for his arrest, the youth was quoted at a mosque as saying he would give up his life for the Islamic State. Police arrested the young Syrian on Tuesday in a refugee shelter in Cologne, on suspicion that he had planned a bomb attack. (Orig. text: dpa)
